This is one of the most embarrassing conditions but also one of the most misunderstood as well. It rears it’s ugly head when you least want it too, when with someone you want to impress or in an important meeting, causing symptoms such as wind and burping or growling in the stomach when you least want it too!
Rushing to the loo and intermittent diarrhoea with constipation are the more inconvenient and personally distressing symptoms and often are the reasons why one seeks treatment or an answer.
Irritable bowel syndrome is an umbrella term, and for each person there are a variety of reasons for these symptoms.
Stress and a fast lifestyle can often start the ball rolling, causing the efficiency of digestion to be reduced as well as the gut immune barrier (Siga). This causes the bad bacteria in your stomach to proliferate on the undigested food. They produce their own enzymes and toxins which causes wind and gasses as well as irritation to the gut lining leading to inflammation. This can then lead to a “leaky gut” which opens up the prospect of food intolerances.
Spices, beans and pulses, too much tea and alcohol are common irritants to a sensitive gut. But what exacerbates a sensitive gut is too much stress which increases the parasympathetic nervous system and causes increased motility to that response.
By completing an adrenal stress test, as well as addressing the gut imbalances, IBS can be managed or eliminated.
